An Artful Escape

For a century, Gore's Landing on the shores of Rice Lake has been attracting travelers, poets, painters and writers to its peaceful and relaxing natural beauty. Cresting a hill overlooking these calm waters is Victoria Inn, an oasis of history, style and comfort.

Originally created as a private summer residence in 1902 for renowned miniature portrait painter, Gerald S. Hayward, the inn now offers a private escape detailed to suit your every need. A wedding here would showcase a stunning natural vista complimented by the care and professionalism offered by current innkeepers Donna and Donald Cane. "We are a romantic, old-fashioned, tranquil lakefront setting for a wedding and give very personal attention to every detail," Donna explained. "The architecture of the inn is very unique (U.S. eastern seaboard, ’Äúshingles-style’Äù architecture) in a small community left alone in time. There are four islands in front of the inn, and the sunsets are spectacular."

The couple purchased the inn in 1994 after Donna worked in medical research for 15 years. The stunning architecture of the inn includes a three-story octagonal tower, bell-curved roof and diamond-paned windows. "I put myself through school working summers at resorts, never knowing I would end up owning an inn," she noted. They gambled, figuring that if it didn't work out, at least they would have a small "corner of paradise" to call home.

They had no reason to worry and neither would you on your special day. Every wedding need will be attended to, including a planned rehearsal dinner cruise on Rice Lake. Donna and Donald will work out a timeline with the bride and groom; offer advice on ministers, bakers, florists, photographers and musicians. Menus will adapt to everyone's needs. "The inn reflects the gentility and tranquility of another time. This community has been home to artists and authors over the last century. There is a rich heritage that we love to share and honour."
