Create Your Own Legend
By Mary Hughes
It didn't take long for inn owners Bob and Bebe Woody to fall in love with the Meekins Home located near the beautiful beaches along the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Roanoke Island. Bebe grew up in the area and both she and her husband Bob were happy to settle here 14 years ago, after retiring from their National Park Ranger careers.
"When we saw the house it had a really good feeling, today they call it Feng Shui, it just has that special sense of peace and tranquility that draws you to it," Bebe explained.
They named the house The White Doe Inn after a native legend that refers to the first English child born in the New World named Virginia Dare, who was turned into a white doe by a jealous medicine man who wanted her attention for his own. It was said that a pearl-tipped arrow through the heart would bring her back to her human form, but a silver-tipped arrow would kill her. She The doe was shot by both at the same time and died, however her spirit was seen for a short time before it vanished. Legend has it you may catch a glimpse of a white doe in the late evenings while strolling about on the island.
Today the White Doe Inn is an 8-room boutique-style inn that is a popular destination for newlyweds and those looking to be married in an intimate ceremony. Running the inn has become a family affair! Bob is a non-denominational wedding officiant who has married in excess of 140 couples. Their daughter, Kristi Wright, is the wedding planner and photographer. She will beautifully capture every moment, from your engagement to the moment you walk down the aisle and beyond.
"This is such a romantic place, everything we do is geared to that. Our inn helps people reconnect too," Bebe explains. Fireplaces, spa tubs and luxurious king or queen-sized beds await you. The grounds offer a secret garden atmosphere with lush manicured foliage that make it private and a wonderful backdrop for receptions of up to 50 people. The menu is created to meet both the budget and preferences of the couple. "The Inn's quaintness and our staff is what guests love the most," Bebe added. Place your memories in the hands of the White Doe Inn, near the shores of the Atlantic.
